The space shuttle Columbia launches with a crew of seven astronauts on a Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission, STS-109, at 6:22 a.m. on 1 March 2002.
The white smoky trails of the solid rocket boosters plunge down to the Atlantic Ocean some 140 miles east of Cape Canaveral to be recovered.
