Turtle Mound & Eldora
page one of two
One of the few sites where the Timucuan people left their mark for future Floridians to see. From the historical marker: "Turtle Mound is an Indian midden---a trash heap of discarded shells accumulated over 600 years. A short boardwalk leads to the summit of the mound."
Actually, the boardwalk is not so short as it weaves its way ever upward to the summit of the mound.

ABOVE LEFT: A view of some of the immense number of shells that comprise the midden, collected from approximately 800 to 1400 A.D. out of the surrounding Mosquito Lagoon. Besides shells, the midden contains other refuse including the bones of animals the Timucuans hunted in the area.

ABOVE RIGHT: The view looking north from the top of the midden.

LEFT: A lone canoe crossing the Mosquito Lagoon with the undeveloped land in the distance gives a small idea of what must have been a familiar view to the Timucuans.

BELOW: The view looking south.
